Capacity pricing bills for slots, the unit of BigQuery compute, sold through editions: Standard, Enterprise, and Enterprise Plus, each adding features and a higher slot rate. Editions support autoscaling slots, where you set a baseline of always on slots and an autoscale ceiling that adds capacity only while queries need it, billed by the second above the baseline. The buyer decision is which mode fits each workload: on demand for spiky or low volume analytics, capacity with a sized baseline plus autoscale for steady, heavy, predictable query loads, and commitments on the baseline for a further discount.

On demand or capacity pricing?
On demand charges for the bytes a query scans, so cost scales with data volume and is unpredictable when query patterns vary. Capacity pricing charges for slots over time, so cost scales with compute provisioned and is predictable but wasteful if slots sit idle. The crossover depends on how busy your slots would be: heavy, steady querying keeps capacity slots busy and usually beats on demand, while bursty or light analytics often stays cheaper on demand because you pay nothing between queries. How do you size baseline and autoscale slots?
Autoscaling slots split capacity into a baseline you always pay for and an autoscale band that scales to demand and bills by the second. Size the baseline to the steady floor of concurrent slot demand, the level your queries keep busy almost all the time, and let autoscale absorb peaks. A baseline set to the peak wastes slots overnight; a baseline of zero with pure autoscale can cost more under constant load and adds scheduling latency. For the steady baseline you can buy slot commitments on a one or three year term for a discount, in the same risk for discount trade as other GCP commitments, so commit only to the baseline you can defend. Control the bytes side too: partition and cluster tables so queries scan less, which lowers cost on demand and reduces the slots a query needs under capacity.
A worked example
A Fortune 500 retailer ran all BigQuery on on demand and saw volatile bills driven by full table scans from unpartitioned tables and ad hoc dashboards. Partitioning and clustering the heaviest tables cut bytes scanned sharply on its own. The steady production query load then moved to an Enterprise edition reservation with a baseline sized to its concurrent floor plus autoscale for peaks, while light exploratory querying stayed on on demand. A one year commitment on the baseline added a further discount. Predictable, busy slots plus leaner scans cut the analytics line materially, part of a program that delivered a 31 percent reduction in the first 90 days.
